It is our belief that the coach / assistant coach relationship is very important in team development. While one leads, the other…..well…..assists. However, what happens when the focus is PLAYER development, rather than TEAM development?
The Riverhounds Academy employs a minimum of three instructors at each session, although many sessions involve up to five! In this way, we maintain a 7:1 player to instructor ratio at all times, with many sessions seeing 4:1. This certainly costs the organization more money, but at the end of the day, the “pros” certainly outweigh the cons.
The 3-Intructor System utilized by The Academy is based upon a Lead, Assist, Help Program. While the first two roles are clear, the latter role, the Help, is what makes The Academy different. This third instructor is employed to analyze the players in each session, to locate those players who need extra attention in order to master a particular skill. The presence of 4 or 5 instructors simply demonstrates the elevated importance of a session’s focus, and the extra attention necessary to deliver that particular skill set. In a world where few children will ask for extra help for fear of being ridiculed, we do our best to eliminate that fear and serve the needs of each player in the system.
