Meet the Trainer – Scott Gibson
Q) As a native of the UK, what brought you to the United States?
A) In the spring of 2002, I was playing in a National Championship game in England aged 17. At the end of the game I was approached by the Head Coach of Duquesne University – Wade Jean. At this point in time I had many options to continue playing in England, but the lure of attaining a first rate education in conjunction with playing Division 1 College Soccer was an opportunity that I couldn’t turn down. In August 2003 I decided to take the gamble to move to the US, to a city I knew nothing about – a decision that changed my life!
Q) Why did you get involved with the Riverhounds?
A) At the conclusion of my collegiate career with Duquesne I decided to continue my education at Duquesne by pursuing my MBA. At this time (May 2007) a former Duquesne team-mate and now Riverhounds Player Jason Kutney, offered me an internship with the team. The lure of experiencing the challenges of a small start up business, coupled with the soccer industry, was the perfect fit for me. The growth of the business over the past year and a half has fuelled my ambition to make the Pittsburgh Riverhounds into a major sporting franchise for this area. With our hard work and dedication to Youth Soccer I feel that this can certainly be achieved.
Q) How does the level of youth soccer in Pittsburgh compare to the UK?
A) Soccer is the most popular sport in the world and even moreso in the UK. Every child from the age of 4 is surrounded by the game, so naturally, the level is strong. Every English Premier League Club has Youth Academies where the strongest players are scouted and signed to youth contracts. (Ages 7-16) It is here where they receive the best training. Since I arrived in Pittsburgh the level of the game has continued to improve and it is encouraging that it is the most played sport for children ages 5-12. We now have to offer the best training through Academies in a fun challenging environment for these ages so we retain them in their teenage years. There is still a long way to go to reach the level of the UK but we are heading in the right direction.
Q) What is your most memorable or life-changing soccer moment?
A) There have been a few but I would have to say the day I signed for Middlesbrough FC Academy aged 12. I was treated like a pro player, was training and playing in facilities that were world class and used by the first team players. The experiences that I got there were life changing and just increased my ambition to become a pro-player. I now see a few of my old Academy teammates playing for England and they would attribute this to the lessons learned at the Academy. On a side note, the 3 years of playing college ball at Duquesne University were also very memorable. It is here that I learned the meaning of “team” and developed friendships that will last for years.
Q) What is it about The Riverhounds Academy that you like the most?
A) I like the fact that we are teaching the players to do things the correct way. We are not rushing to get to the next step in their development if the players are not ready. All sessions are planned to perfection under time constraints which allows for a structured professional environment - It reminds me of my experiences in the Middlesbrough Academy. With the younger kids, doing things properly and habitually is the only way to learn – why rush a player through if he/she is not ready? We push the players in a fun environment and are able to adapt easily to the differing ability levels that we see. To see the look on a player’s face when they overcome a challenge is very rewarding.
